Korean Tense System
Kovin says ;
When studying Korean, tense, aspect, and modality are very important grammatical elements for understanding the time and progression of a sentence as well as the speaker's attitude. In particular, the present tense, past tense, perfective, and sentence-final endings of Korean differ in usage from English, making them areas where foreign learners often struggle.
한국어를 공부할 때 시제, 상(aspect), 양태(modality)는 문장의 시간과 진행 상태, 화자의 태도를 이해하는 데 매우 중요한 문법 요소입니다. 특히 한국어의 현재시제, 과거시제, 완료, 종결형 어미는 영어와 사용 방식이 다르기 때문에 외국인 학습자가 자주 어려워하는 부분입니다.
1. 한국어 시제(Tense)의 정의
Tense is a grammatical category that indicates the time of an action, event, or state in relation to the time of speaking. Korean generally distinguishes past, present, and future time, although context and grammatical endings also play important roles in expressing time.
시제(時制)는 어떤 행동이나 사건 또는 상태가 말하는 시점과 어떤 시간적 관계에 있는지를 나타내는 문법적 범주입니다. 한국어에서는 일반적으로 과거, 현재, 미래의 시간을 나타내며, 문맥과 문법적 어미도 시간 표현에 중요한 역할을 합니다.
Example ;
나는 지금 한국어를 공부한다. I am studying Korean right now.
어제 친구를 만났다. I met a friend yesterday.
내일 서울에 갈 것이다. I'm going to Seoul tomorrow.
민수는 매일 아침 운동을 한다. Minsu exercises every morning.
지난주에 새로운 책을 샀다. I bought a new book last week.

2. 한국어의 ‘상(Aspect)’이란?
Aspect describes how an action or event unfolds over time, such as whether it is ongoing, completed, repeated, or continuing. Tense focuses on when an event occurs, while aspect focuses on the state or development of the event.
상(相)은 어떤 행동이나 사건이 시간 속에서 어떻게 진행되는지를 나타내는 문법적 의미입니다. 예를 들어 행동이 진행 중인지, 완료되었는지, 반복되는지 또는 계속되는지를 나타냅니다. 시제가 ‘언제’ 일어나는지를 나타낸다면, 상은 행동이 ‘어떻게 진행되는지’를 나타냅니다.
Example ;
지금 책을 읽고 있다. I'm reading a book right now.
아이가 밥을 먹고 있다. The child is eating.
숙제를 끝냈다. I finished my homework.
비가 계속 내리고 있다. It keeps on raining.
그는 매일 같은 운동을 반복하고 있다. He is repeating the same exercise every day.
핵심 표현:-고 있다, -아/어 있다, -았/었-
3. 한국어의 ‘양태(Modality)’란?
Modality expresses the speaker's attitude, judgment, possibility, necessity, intention, or certainty regarding an action or situation.
양태(樣態)는 어떤 행동이나 상황에 대한 화자의 태도, 판단, 가능성, 필요성, 의지, 추측 또는 확신 등을 나타내는 문법적 의미입니다.
Example ;
내일 비가 올 것 같다. It looks like it will rain tomorrow.
지금 출발해야 한다. We have to leave now.
저는 한국에 꼭 가고 싶습니다. I really want to go to Korea.
민수는 아마 집에 있을 것이다. Minsu is probably at home.
오늘은 일찍 자야 겠다. I should go to bed early tonight.

4. 종결형 어미(sentence-final ending)에서의 시제
In Korean, tense is often expressed through sentence-final endings or pre-final endings that occur before the final ending. These grammatical forms help indicate whether an event is viewed as present, past, or future.
한국어에서 시제는 문장의 종결형 어미와 종결형 어미 앞에 오는 선어말어미 등을 통해 나타나는 경우가 많습니다. 이러한 문법 형태를 통해 사건이나 행동이 현재, 과거 또는 미래와 관련되어 있음을 나타낼 수 있습니다.
대표적으로 다음과 같은 형태가 사용됩니다.
현재: -ㄴ다/는다, -다
과거: -았/었-
미래·추측: -겠-, -(으)ㄹ 것이다
Example ;
나는 매일 학교에 간다. I go to school every day.
민수는 지금 책을 읽는다. Minsu is reading a book right now.
어제 영화를 봤다. I watched a movie yesterday.
다음 주에 부산에 갈 것이다. I'm going to Busan next week.
내일은 날씨가 좋을 것이다. It should be sunny tomorrow.
5. 현재시제의 정의(Definition of the Present Tense)
The Korean present tense is used to describe an action, event, or state that occurs at the present time. It can also describe habitual actions, general facts, and situations that are considered valid or certain.
한국어의 현재시제는 현재 일어나고 있는 행동이나 사건 또는 현재의 상태를 나타냅니다. 또한 반복적으로 일어나는 습관, 일반적인 사실, 현재에도 유효하다고 판단되는 사실이나 확정적인 상황을 나타낼 때도 사용됩니다.
Example ;
나는 지금 한국어를 공부한다. I am studying Korean right now.
동생은 매일 아침 운동을 한다. My younger sibling exercises every morning.
서울은 한국의 수도이다. Seoul is the capital of Korea.
물은 100도에서 끓는다. Water boils at 100 degrees Celsius.

6. 현재 시제의 범위: 확정적인 경우
Scope of the present tense: in the definite case
한국어 현재시제는 단순히 ‘지금 이 순간’만 의미하지 않습니다. 일정한 사실이나 습관, 일반적인 진리, 확정된 일정 등을 나타낼 때도 현재형을 사용할 수 있습니다.
The Korean present tense can extend beyond the exact moment of speaking. It may be used for habitual actions, general truths, permanent or relatively stable states, and scheduled or definite future events.
한국어의 현재시제는 말하는 바로 그 순간에만 한정되지 않습니다. 습관적인 행동, 일반적인 사실, 지속적이거나 비교적 안정된 상태, 그리고 확정된 미래의 일정 등을 나타낼 때에도 현재시제를 사용할 수 있습니다.
example ;
나는 매일 아침 운동한다. I exercise every morning.
지구는 태양 주위를 돈다. The Earth revolves around the Sun.
겨울에는 날씨가 춥다. In winter, the weather is cold.
서울행 기차는 오전 9시에 출발한다. The train to Seoul departs at 9 a.m.

중요 포인트:
특히 기차가 9시에 출발한다, 학교가 다음 주에 개학한다와 같은 문장은 미래의 일이지만 확정된 일정이므로 현재형을 사용할 수 있습니다.
7. ‘-다’의 특수 용법: 무언가를 강조할 때
Special usage of '-다': when emphasizing something
한국어의 -다는 단순히 현재시제를 나타내는 기능만 가지고 있는 것은 아닙니다. 특정한 상황에서는 화자가 어떤 사실이나 행동을 강조하거나 강한 의지를 나타내는 느낌으로 사용될 수 있습니다.
The Korean ending -다 can sometimes be used emphatically to present a statement as firm, definite, or strongly asserted. Depending on context and intonation, it can give the sentence a strong or determined tone.
한국어의 종결형 어미 ‘-다’는 문맥에 따라 어떤 사실을 단정적으로 제시하거나 강하게 강조하는 특별한 느낌을 나타낼 수 있습니다. 억양과 상황에 따라 화자의 강한 의지나 확신을 전달하기도 합니다.
Example ;
나는 반드시 이 일을 해낸다. I will definitely accomplish this.
오늘은 꼭 운동을 한다. I’m definitely going to work out today.
나는 이번 시험에 합격한다. I will pass this exam.
오늘은 내가 반드시 간다. Today, I will definitely go.
이번에는 끝까지 한다. This time, I'll see it through.
학습 포인트: 이러한 '-다'는 단순한 현재 사실을 설명하는 것보다 강한 의지·확신·강조의 느낌을 전달할 수 있습니다. 실제 의미는 문맥과 억양에 따라 달라질 수 있습니다.
Learning Point: These '-da' forms can convey a stronger sense of determination, conviction, or emphasis than simply describing a present fact. Its actual meaning can vary depending on the context and intonation.
8. 과거시제의 정의(Definition of the Past Tense)
The Korean past tense is used to indicate that an action, event, or state occurred or existed before the reference time, usually before the time of speaking. It is commonly expressed with the pre-final endings -았- or -었-.
한국어의 과거시제는 어떤 행동이나 사건 또는 상태가 기준이 되는 시간보다 이전에 발생했거나 존재했음을 나타냅니다. 일반적으로 말하는 시점보다 이전의 일을 표현하며, 대표적으로 선어말어미 ‘-았-’과 ‘-었-’을 사용합니다.
Example ;
나는 어제 영화를 봤다. I watched the movie yesterday.
친구가 지난주에 서울에 왔다. My friend came to Seoul last week.
어제 맛있는 음식을 먹었다. I ate delicious food yesterday.
작년에 한국어를 배웠다. I learned Korean last year.
지난밤에 비가 많이 내렸다. It rained a lot last night.

9. 완료의 ‘-았/었-’: 행동의 완료
The '-았/-었-' of the perfect tense: the completion of an action
-았/었-은 과거의 행동을 나타낼 뿐만 아니라 어떤 행동이 완료되었음을 나타내는 데에도 사용됩니다.
The Korean form -았/었- can express completion by indicating that an action or event has been carried out and reached an endpoint. Depending on context, it can describe a completed action in the past or a resulting state.
한국어의 ‘-았/었-’은 어떤 행동이나 사건이 이루어져 끝났음을 나타내는 완료의 의미로 사용될 수 있습니다. 문맥에 따라 과거에 완료된 행동이나 그 행동의 결과로 현재까지 이어지는 상태를 나타낼 수도 있습니다.
Example;
나는 숙제를 다 했다. I have done my homework.
동생은 밥을 먹었다. My younger sibling ate.
학생들은 시험을 끝냈다. The students finished the exam.
나는 책을 다 읽었다. I finished reading the book.
우리는 준비를 마쳤다. We are ready.
비교
숙제를 한다 → 현재 진행되는 행동
숙제를 했다 → 숙제를 완료한 행동
숙제를 다 했다 → 숙제를 완전히 끝냈다는 의미가 더욱 분명함
10. ‘-았/었-’의 특수용법: 가상의 미래
Special usage of '-았/었/': hypothetical future
한국어의 -았/었-은 일반적으로 과거를 나타내지만, 특정한 조건이나 상황에서는 현재 시점에서 아직 발생하지 않은 일을 이미 발생한 것처럼 가정하여 표현할 수 있습니다.
The Korean form -았/었- can sometimes be used in hypothetical or conditional contexts to describe a future event as if it has already happened. This usage often presents a hypothetical situation, assumption, or condition from the speaker's perspective.
한국어의 ‘-았/었-’은 특정한 가정이나 조건의 문맥에서 아직 일어나지 않은 미래의 일을 마치 이미 일어난 것처럼 표현할 수 있습니다. 이러한 용법은 가상의 상황, 가정 또는 조건을 강조하여 표현하는 데 사용됩니다.
Example ;
내일 비가 왔으면 집에서 쉬자. If it rains tomorrow, let's stay home and rest.
이번 주말에 눈이 내렸으면 좋겠다. I hope it snows this weekend.
시험에 합격했으면 좋겠다. I hope you pass the exam.
휴가를 갔으면 바다에서 수영하고 싶다. If I were on vacation, I’d like to swim in the sea
시간이 있었으면 같이 여행을 가자. If we had time, let's go on a trip together.
학습 포인트
위 문장에서는 왔으면, 내렸으면, 합격했으면, 갔으면, 있었으면처럼 과거형의 형태가 사용되지만, 반드시 과거의 실제 사건을 의미하는 것은 아닙니다.
Learning Points
In the above sentences, the past tense forms such as 'if you had come,' 'if you had gotten off,' 'if you had passed,' 'if you had gone,' and 'if you had been' are used, but they do not necessarily refer to actual past events.
예를 들어:
시험에 합격했으면 좋겠다. I hope you pass the exam.
→ 아직 시험 결과가 나오지 않았습니다. The exam results are not out yet.
→ 미래의 가능성을 가정하고 있습니다. This is based on future possibilities.
→ -았/었으면 좋겠다는 희망이나 가정을 나타냅니다. indicates hope or a wish.
